The first few are of Mark at age 19, when I first met him. The second-to-last was taken in the mid-90s and the last one around 2005. I just found a letter from him from 2007, and as with all of his writing, it brought him into sharp three-dimensional focus. His voice, his candor, his slight tilt at the waist; arm cocked upright with a cigarette his “cynical, calculated exterior” (his words) barely masking his sentimental and sappy insides. There is so much I’d love to write, but for now I will just state what is already known here: Mark A. Dienstag was a most remarkable man who left an indelible impression with his immediate, observant, witty and deeply caring nature. I can’t believe my good fortune to have known him, even though my brain felt hopelessly simple when around him!!! (he loves me anyway, ha.) -Heidi Webb
